Piedmont Natural Gas will be conducting a routine pipeline maintenance in Greenville Sunday.
The maintenance was originally scheduled for Saturday.
The operations will be performed near 3103 Landmark Street.
The work may extend into the evening hours.
Officials said the maintenance involves a process called “flaring” in which excess natural gas used to propel an inspection device through the pipeline is released and burned off.
Flaring produces a tall flame that can be seen from a distance, as well as a loud noise and possibly a whistling sound.
The process is completely safe and routine.
Officials are contacting local law enforcement and first responders in the event they receive 911 calls from residents who are not aware that the process is routine, completely safe, and monitored closely by Piedmont employees and local fire department personnel.
