Cape Carteret Police have identified the man involved in a standoff in a shopping center parking lot off Enterprise Avenue.
The Cape Carteret Police Department were dispatched to the Carteret Crossing Shopping Center in reference to a motor home that was parked in the parking lot of Lowes Foods Wednesday around 9 a.m.
The caller advised that there was a woman dropping notes out of the window of the motor home stating to call 911 and that she needed help.
Police arrived on the scene and the woman stepped out of the motor home and was escorted by law enforcement to a safe location.
The woman advised at the time that she needed EMS and was subsequently treated and transported by Western Carteret EMS to Carteret Health Care who were standing by at the scene.
Information was provided to police at the scene that a man may have been armed.
Police ordered the man to exit the motor home, however, he refused to exit the motor home.
Chief McKinney requested the assistance of the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office SRT to assist in removing the man from the motor home.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office Negotiator arrived on scene and attempted to negotiate with the man to exit the motor home until the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office SRT team arrived on the scene.
In addition to the Carteret County Sheriffs Office SRT team, assistance was also provided by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, NC State Highway Patrol, NC Wildlife, Emerald Isle Police Department, and the Morehead City Police Department.
The man was removed from the motor home without incident by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office SRT team and has been identified as, Leo Charles Schmidt, 51, of Emerald Isle.
Schmidt was arrested by Cape Carteret Police Officers at the scene and transported to Carteret Health Care for Medical Clearance before being transported to the Carteret County Jail.
The case is under investigation.

The public is urged to stay out of the crime scene area until the investigation into what happened is completed.
