Precautions taken for crane on 10th Street in Greenville

Local

A Greenville construction company is taking precautions for its crane on 10th Street ahead of Hurricane Florence.

Taft Development Group is putting the tower crane in what is known as a free spin cycle.

“We have a foundation there that’s about the size and depth of a swimming pool,” said Mike McCarty, director of development for Taft Development Group. “And what we’re going to do is place it in free spin mode so that there’s not a lot of resistance with the wind. It moves with the wind, so it will spin during the hurricane with the wind so that. It’s just a little bit more free moving.”

It is designed to withstand winds in a Category 3 hurricane.

The student development project the crane is being used for is scheduled for completion by the fall.
