Due to the amount of phone calls concerning projects underway, park officials for Hammocks Beach State Park have decided to hold monthly updates open to the public. Carol Burtt lives down the street from the park and has attended these monthly updates.
“We kind of want to keep it a secret, cause we don’t want everybody to come, but we in the same token- we are so proud of the park, that’s why we try to stay informed,” Burtt said.
Burtt said the meetings are more important than a Facebook post or an e-mail, because it allows people to ask questions.
“And you know it’s important to know these things because you get anxious, especially as the warm weather is coming and you want to participate,” Burtt added.
During this month’s meeting, one of the main projects discussed was the Ferry Dock Reconstruction. Jake Vitak, a park ranger, said the docks are scheduled to arrive by late March.
“The company that makes the docks has been back ordered because of basically all of the other orders of facilities on the eastern part of the country that were damaged,” Vitak said.
The new floating dock should be competely reconstructed by July- pending now weather delays.
“We were hoping to get this project done before the start of our season, which means they would have started much sooner, but of course with the hurricane, everything was delayed anyway,” Vitak added.
Park officials are asking the public to be patient during the reconstruction process.
