Sentara Albemarle hospital lockdown lifted after potential threat, 1 arrested

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WNCT) One person has been arrested after Sentara Albemarle Medical Center was under a perimeter lockdown status Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday around 1:02 p.m., the Elizabeth City Police Department responded to 1144 North Road Street, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in reference to communicating threats.

Police arrived on the scene and spoke to medical personnel about the threat that was made.

A representative from Sentara Albemarle Medical Center told police that Beatrice Staton Ali, 54, of South Mills, communicated a threat while she was in the lobby of the emergency room department.

Ali left the medical center prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

Representatives from the medical center made the decision to place the center on lockdown until law enforcement located Ali.

While the medical center was on lockdown, police provided security.

Police searched the area for Ali and located her in the 900 block of North Road Street.

Once Ali was located and in custody, the medical center lifted the lockdown.

A representative from Sentara Albemarle Medical Center went before the magistrate and obtained a warrant for communicating threats on Ali.

Ali was processed, brought before the magistrate, given a $1,000 bond and transported to Albemarle District Jail.

A spokesperson with the hospital told our sister station WAVY News 10 the lockdown was due to a potential threat but did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.

The lockdown was lifted around 4:15 p.m. and normal operations resumed, the medical center posted on Facebook.

“Thank you to the Elizabeth City Police Department for their quick response and assistance. They are pursuing this case as a criminal matter,” the post reads.

Annya Soucy said any visitors and patients were required to show a photo ID at the hospital entrance and outpatient locations.

The Elizabeth City Police Department responded to the hospital to investigate.
