Surveyors check coastal waters for safety of bigger ships

The first phase of Hurricane Florence recovery is underway in Carteret County.

On Monday, crews went out to check on how the sand shifted during the storm, which could affect how ships reach the storm.

“The ships rode out the storm in the ocean,” said Barry Guthrie, the captain on a Beaufort survey boat. “So they need to actually get in, but they will not come until we clear the channel. We’ll clear out the channel all the way to the port, then they will make their way in.”

The crew said there are three ships waiting to come into port, and the economic impact of them not reaching land could be tremendous.
