Teen charged after police conducted chase after spotting stolen vehicle in Kinston

A teen has been charged after police conducted a chase after a vehicle reported stolen from Plymouth was spotted in Kinston Monday afternoon.

The Kinston Police Department said they spotted a stolen vehicle traveling on Bright Street on Monday around 1:30 p.m.

In addition to being sought due to the stolen status, the 2011 Ford Fusion was believed to be involved in several larcenies from motor vehicles earlier in the day.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver fled southbound on Queen Street.

Due to the multiple felony violations involved as well as an inability to identify the driver, officers gave chase.

The pursuit continued outside of Kinston and came to an end when the pursued vehicle crashed along a gravel path off of Jesse Howard Road in Lenoir County.

The crash is being investigated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver, 16-year-old Kenneth Leroy Chavis III of Plymouth, was transported to UNC Lenoir for treatment.

Chavis was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and felony eluding.

The vehicle was reported stolen in Plymouth on May 9.

The investigation into the larcenies from vehicles from earlier in the day continues and charges are pending.

An 18-year-old male as well as a 19-year-old female passenger, both from Kinston, were transported to UNC Lenoir for treatment.

None of the injuries in this crash appear to be life-threatening.

The stolen vehicle is being processed for evidence.

The investigation is still ongoing.
