Two robberies in one week at Havelock hotel concern locals

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) — Two robberies at the same hotel in less than a week have Havelock residents concerned for the safety of the area.

A worker at the Havelock Inn and Suites said the person who broke in both times was able to get in through an air conditioning vent on the outside of the building. The robber went straight to the office and stole money first from a cash box and then from an atm.

A video provided by the havelock Police Department shows the still unidentified robber sneaking into the hotel and jumping over the counter to steal money.

“They come across the counter and got money out of the register.,” said Havelock Inn & Suites employee Tammy Tucker. “Not much, but they got some.”

Tucker wasn’t there at the time, but said she has thought about what she would do if she was.

“If they got a gun then I ain’t got no choice.,” said Tucker. “At gunpoint, I would probably do it. And then after that I would look at them good, get a good description, and then call the police after they leave.”

Employees at the Speedway gas station just down the street from the Havelock Inn said they’re not surprised this happened there

“This has happened many times,” said Speedway employee Alisha Cunningham, “at that particular hotel before and it doesn’t seem to deter people.”

The police say the crime was likely related to drugs.

“There is a drug issue in Havelock,” said Cunningham. “I mean you’re looking at anywhere from marijuana, heroin, a lot of pill users. I hear about it a lot here in this area.”

Tucker said the hotel has taken steps to ensure that they won’t be robbed again.

“They did take the ATM machine out of here,” said Tucker, “and we’re very cautious of what’s in the register and what we do down here.”

The Havelock Inn and Suites is directly across the street from the Havelock Police Department.

If you have any information about the person in the video, you’re encouraged to contact the Havelock Police Department.
