KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT)- After struggling to attract customers and losing stores, Vernon Park Mall in Kinston is on the market for $9.5 million.

According to Eastern Carolinas Commercial Real Estate, the building could be a good candidate for a large corporation to take over as a technology campus or call center.

However, the current owners said they already have a redevelopment plan in works for the building.

It would include a trampoline park, craft brewery and sports complex, as well as possible neighboring hotels.

“This redevelopment plan, as it moves forward into fruition, makes this property worth more,” said Mike Ingalls, general manager of Vernon Park Mall Holdings Corp. “That actually increases the value of the present mall owners property to be able to get more.”

Kinston Mayor BJ Murphy says while the city of Kinston doesn’t own the property, whoever takes ownership will continue to have support for development.

“You know our community is full of opportunity and if you’ve seen anything that our community has been able to do, it battles through adversity,” Murphy said. “And this mall is a symbol of what is to come in our community.”
