Washington receives national accreditation award

The City of Washington has been getting recognition on a national scale.

In the latter part of 2018 through the earlier part of this year, the city was in the running to be featured on the Hulu show Small Business Revolution. Now, the city has been recognized for another accolade.

Main Street America has given Washington’s main street an accreditation. Washington is one of only 47 small communities across the state to receive this award.

“A healthy main street is a healthy town,” said Meg Howdy, executive director of the Washington Harbor District Alliance. “If industries want to come in the first stop is on your main street because they want to know they can live work and play and this is getting us recognized on a national level.”

The accreditation will give the city more grant opportunities. Local leaders hope it will help increase the city’s housing. Many also hope it will help their street infrastructure project and revitalize outdated utilizes.

New Bern, Morehead City and Edenton are some of the other locations in the East who have accredited main streets through this program as well.
