5-year-old killed by lightning strike in Currituck County

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) – A five year old boy has died after being hit by lightning on Sunday evening.

The emergency call came in just after 4pm at Carova Beach.

Our sister station in Norfolk, WAVY, reports the boy and his family were preparing to go back into their car after spending time at the beach. As the boy and his father were getting into the car, the boy was struck by lightning.

The child suffered burns from the strike and went into cardiac arrest. EMS arrived on the scene and performed CPR.

The boy was rushed to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach where he was pronounced dead.

There are no other details at this time.
