PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. (WNCT) — The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Noll Shores originally opened its doors in 1976, and it underwent an extensive three-year renovation which tripled its size.
More than 11 million people have visited there.
With more than 5,000 different kinds of animals, visitors can see different species of fish, sea turtles, and sharks.
The aquarium’s mission is focused on educating each visitor that their role in this world, and how it impacts marine life, especially in eastern North Carolina.
From conservation, and sustainability…to breaking down how you can make a difference for these creatures and marine life.
The Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said, “only the educated are free.” While aquarium activity director Wayne Justice may not be an ancient philosopher, he does share Epictetus’ belief in the value of education.
“Our programs are really designed built with fun in mind, but also some conservation and education initiatives built into the program,” said Justice. “…You come, and you’re not only having fun outside in the water, but you’re also learning about the kind of habitats, the eco system and the animals that live here”
The aquarium was also recognized as the ninth best aquarium in the country.
