Additional Marines from fallen Camp Lejeune Marine’s unit heading to Iraq

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A Camp Lejeune Marine is the second combat casualty in Operation Inherent Resolve.

The pentagon confirms Staff Sergeant Louis F. Cardin of Temecula, California died Saturday after ISIS attacked his unit with rocket fire in Iraq. He’s part of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Camp Lejeune.

Several other Marines were injured and are receiving treatment.

According to the Marine Corps Times, The U.S. Marine Corps is sending more Marines from Camp Lejeune to the area where Cardin died Saturday. It’s unclear if those Marines will be in addition to the men and women already serving in the area or as replacements for those injured and killed in the weekend attack.

Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the service members involved, their families and their coalition teammates who will continue the fight against ISIL with resolve and determination.
