Adopting small animals can ease back to school anxiety

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s almost time to head back to school for those who aren’t so excited finding a furry friend could help the anxiety.

Local pet shops said they are seeing an increase in adoptions for cats and dogs. They said it is a good idea to opt for smaller animals like guinea pigs or hamsters, as they require less care. When you press their heart against yours, your heart rate can slow and may match theirs.

“They are easier maintenance, something like a mouse or hamster or gerbil, you can keep in a small cage and do well in, like, a small apartment versus a dog, who you have to take outside,” said Alex Nagey with Petco.

Their small bodies and needs bring comfort to children.
