Family and friends are sharing fond memories of an Appalachian State University student who was killed in a car crash in Virginia last week.

The driver, 21-year-old Melanie G. Foreman, of Chesterfield County, Virginia, died at the scene.

The single-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on April 18 on Route 360 just west of Route 710, in Charlotte County, Virginia.

Foreman was driving home to Chesterfield County for Easter weekend when she ran off the road. Police say she over-corrected, which caused the vehicle to re-enter the eastbound lanes, spin around, run off the right side, and slam into a tree. She was wearing a seat belt.

Virginia State Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

Foreman went to Cosby High School and played JV volleyball. She was a senior at App State where she was an Evolutionary Biology major with Ecology and Environmental Studies. She was one month away from graduation.

Foreman’s friend Shelby Bates said the loss of her friend is unbearable.

“It hurts,” Bates said.

Bates remembers Foreman as someone who had made an impact on everyone she crossed paths with. Bates and Foreman met at Cosby High School and both shared a friendship through the years.

“She was so funny and she was so smart,” Bates said.

Bates said that Foreman had plans to save the earth and loved amphibians, salamanders, and reptiles.

“She was really into nature and conservation and cared deeply about the planet,” Bates said.

Bates said Foreman loved to paint and inspire others, and that her legacy will live on through her artwork.

Foreman’s father said his daughter used to sell her artwork in Carytown. He also said she loved butterflies.

He said what he’ll miss most about his daughter is being around her and the joy she brought to others.

Family and friends will celebrate Foreman’s life on Saturday in Chester, Virginia.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Bee Project at the Sierra Club or the Amphibian Foundation.
