In Greenville, people are bringing awareness to child support. August is designated as Child Support Awareness Month.
The Pitt County Department of Social Services hosted a walk today to shed light on the topic. This is the first year it has been sponsored. Staff from both the department and partnering agencies participated. Nearly 50 people walked in bright, blue shirts.
The DSS offers support to over 9,000 child support cases.
Michele McCorkle, Family Support Services Program Administrator for Pitt County, says they collected $15.4 million for families in Pitt County in 2017.
“It assists individuals who have non-custodial parents outside of the home,” said Michele McCorkle, Family Support Services Program Administrator for Pitt County, “in an effort to help the child maintain a lifestyle that they would if they had both parents in the home.”
McCorkle says they will host the walk again next year.
