BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) – Emergency first responders reported to the scene of a construction accident on Monday morning in Beaufort.

Beaufort Police Chief Paul Burdette Jr. said Edward Wayne Turner, 42, who was working on installing a roof at a new boathouse building fell 40 feet to the ground.

The incident happened at The Boathouse at Front Street Village on Lennoxville Road.

Turner was sent to the Carteret HealthCare with life-threatening injuries. He later died of his injuries.

Other workers witnessed the accident.

The case is now being investigated by the North Carolina Department of Labor.

A spokeswoman told WNCT 9 On Your Side that state investigators will be looking to see if there were any safety violations.

According to a state fact sheet about fatal falls from a roof, investigators will look to see if there were any guardrails, any type of fall protection, any protective equipment and more.

The state could issue citations or enforce penalties if violations are found.

The spokeswoman said the police chief and the owner of the contractor notified the department. State investigators were on site on Monday.

The investigation could take three-to-four months to wrap up.
