One fire department in Pitt County has a new way to save your pets.

Bell Arthur Fire Department received three oxygen masks recently.

There are several sizes to save anything from a small kitten to a large dog or donkey.

Assistant Fire Chief Blake O’Neal said pets are involved in about 75 percent of the house fires they respond to.

“It is needed, we are actually encountering more and more animals in house fires in the past several years now, a lot more animals are being kept in the house, owners are going away, houses are catching on fire,” O’Neal said.

He said the masks are currently in use, but they have not had to use them yet.
