Original Story 7/19/2016:

A suspect in an early morning stabbing and assault downtown has turned himself in.

Greenville Police said in a news release he’s currently undergoing evaluation by healthcare personnel. Charges are pending the outcome of the evaluation and consultation of the District Attorney’s Office.

The suspect has yet to be identified.

It happened near 5th Street and Evans Street shortly after midnight Tuesday.

Police said that the suspect, a black male, wearing a black shirt with lettering on the front, reportedly approached two people walking to their car in the Five Points Plaza parking lot and assaulted one of them by shoving him against a car. Police said the victim, 26-year-old Jonathan Rodgers, suffered bruising but didn’t require medical attention.

According to police, the suspect then made his way to a small grassy area in the 400 block of Evans Street, where several people were playing the Pokemon Go game. The suspect reportedly initiated a physical confrontation with a 19-year-old man, pulling out a knife. That 19-year-old victim, Dillon Manning, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Vidant Medical Center, was treated, and released.

Police believe the assaults were unprovoked and there is no reason to believe the suspect lured the Pokemon players to that location or that the assault was directly connected to the game in any way.
