Car bursts into flames after chase ends at Garner church, Wake County officials say

Garner NC Car Fire After Chase

A car went up in flames Thursday afternoon after a pair crashed following a chase in the Garner area, Wake County deputies said.

One suspect was still on the run, authorities say.

The incident was reported around 2 p.m. when a deputy tried to stop a stolen Toyota Corolla in the 400 block of Creech Road, said Eric Curry of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Before the deputy could stop the car, the driver and passenger drove the car into the parking lot of Solid Rock Ministry International and fled the car.

The car kept going into nearby woods and burst into flames, Curry said.

The pair in the car ran in an area near Creech Road Elementary School. The school was under a “code yellow lockdown” for a while, but the lockdown was later lifted.

Garner police assisted in the search, Curry said. An officer told CBS17 they tried forming a perimeter in an area near U.S. Highway 70.

Curry said that the car was involved in an “improper use” situation.

Bishop Luther K. Brooks got a call from his secretary to come to the church soon after the crash.

“We don’t need this kind of excitement. We need the kind of excitement where people want to come and get to know Christ. That’s who we are and what we do,” Brooks said. “Normally, if they got out and ran, they were running from something. So, what we’re gonna do is we’re just going to pray for them, whatever the need is, whatever is going on in their lives that they’ll get it together and get it fixed.”
