MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – In Carteret County, the Department of Social Services will be taking child support work into their own hands.

Commissioners opted last week to get rid of using private contractor MAXIMUS in the coming months, instead the work will be done in-house.

The director of the county’s human services says by putting the work in the county’s hand they can better serve citizens at a lesser cost and greater quality.

“If we’re not collecting that money then that child isn’t getting what he or she needs to have their support,” said David Atkinson.

The current contractor oversees nearly 2500 open child support cases and is responsible for nearly six million dollars in collections.

The county will hire six workers as county staff to serve as the child support enforcement team.

“Our staff can do a better job of servicing Carteret County residents and do it for our own children,” said Atkinson.
