The Christmas spirit in Morehead City is strong, despite the lingering effects of Hurricane Florence.
The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee is collecting baked goods for troops in the area who will be on duty during the holidays.
It is part of their annual Cookies for Troops donation initiative that has been going on for 15 years.
The group delivers about 25 to 30 boxes every year of cookies along with homemade cards from students in Carteret County.
“They’re really appreciative of it. They’re somewhat overwhelmed at times when we start delivering 25-30 boxes of cookies to them,” said Robert Upchurch, member of Carteret County’s Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, also known as the cookie colonel.
The boxes will be delivered to the Marine Air Corps Station Cherry Point and members of the Coast Guard in Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle on Thursday.
Donations will be accepted until 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce’s office at 801 Arendell St. Suite 1.
