MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – The Carteret County community and the Coast Guard joined together for an honor recognizing a partnership only second in the nation

Thursday’s ceremony, held at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, marked Carteret County’s official designation as a United States Coast Guard community.

With a rich history of partnership dating back to the 1800’s, the Admiral of the 5th Coast Guard District says the entire county has always been supportive of their efforts.

“We’ve had a close working relationship with the communities here and in turn, we protect the mariners and then, in turn, they provide support for the Coast Guard members here,” said Admiral Stephen Metruck.

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce approached the Coast Guard back in 2013, writing letters seeking the designation of being named a Coast Guard community.

While 16 cities in the U.S. have been named a Coast Guard city, including Wilmington and Elizabeth City, only one county in the nation has been deemed a Coast Guard county.

That location is in Camden County, Georgia, and Carteret County wanted to be the next to achieve that honor.

“It’s a great day for us as a community, but it’s also a big day for the Coast Guard. It gives them a small degree of recognition from the local community of how important they are to the local community,” said Bucky Oliver, the Chairman of the Carteret Chamber of Commerce.

And with the Coast Guard’s presence at both Fort Macon near Atlantic Beach and in Emerald Isle, Metruck says Coast Guardsmen have become very interwoven into the fabric of the community.

“The recognition of Carteret County as a Coast Guard community, it really recognizes those contributions of all the citizens,” said Metruck.
