KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Class is canceled for students at Kinston High School Friday after an early morning fire.

Lenoir County Public Schools spokesperson Patrick Holmes says around 1 a.m. Friday, the Kinston Fire Department reported to Kinston High School because of a small fire in the dishwasher room of the cafeteria.

Investigators continue to determine the cause of the fire, however they believe it started under the dishwashing unit.

The need for repairs caused LCPS to cancel school Friday for students. Faculty and staff reported as usual.

Spokesman Patrick Holmes said the primary damage was to the unity and interior walls due to smoke.

LCPS will work with the fire department, N.C. Department of Public Instruction and its insurance carrier to get an estimate of damage and will meet with restoration contractors to begin the process of restoring the cafeteria to full use.

Kinston High School is expected to be back to its regular schedule on Monday.

If the cafeteria is not usable at that time, the school will make arraignments to feed students and staff.
