Consumer Alert: Grandparents may be the target of a specific scam

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A warning for senior citizens, the Better Business Bureau of Eastern North Carolina says grandparents may be the target of a specific scam.

Here’s how it works.

A scammer calls pretending to be your grandchild, claiming they are in a bad situation and ask you to wire money to post bail or pay for damages.

The money though ultimately goes to the scam artist and then you’re out thousands of dollars.

“Scamming knows no bounds, there’s nothing wrong with an older adult calling their son, daughter, niece, grandchild saying “Would you mind checking this number out for me, something doesn’t sound right?,” said Rich Zeck, Executive Director for the Pitt County Council on Aging.

The council says if feel like you’re being scammed, hang up, call a family member and ask if the incident is legitimate.
