(WBAY) – A buck enjoyed a morning swim in the power canal in Kaukauna Monday.

The Kaukauna Police Department shared the amusing sight on their Facebook page, dubbing the deer “Joe Buck.” (However, it’s not clear if they were inspired by the  NFL announcer with the same name.)

The police department, Kaukauna Fire Department, Kaukauna Utilities and the Department of Natural Resources worked together to get Joe Buck out of the canal, located under the Crooks Ave. Bridge. The fire department says the animal had no way of getting out on its own due to the walls surrounding the canal.

The fire department took out its inflatable motor boat after the utility shut down the turbines to stop the current.  Crews pulled up the deer, grabbed it by antlers and got it to the rescuers waiting to lift him out of the water.

Crews put a blanket over the buck’s head to try to calm him. The fire department said it didn’t take long for Joe Buck to bolt into the woods.

“The entire rescue was planned with every step being prepared for and the rescue was executed without any difficulties,” said a news release from the Kaukauna Fire Department. “Special thanks to all who worked together to accomplish this very odd rescue.”

No one was hurt during the rescue.

The rescue took about one hour.
