Cycle North Carolina is making its way to the East.
The “Mountains to Coast” bicycle ride begins in Blowing Rock.
Bikers will travel from Blowing Rock to Atlantic Beach over a one-week period.
It will make a stop in New Bern the weekend before Mumfest.
Some businesses like Atomic Cycles in New Bern are still recovering from Florence.
“We had two feet of water inside the shop here,” mechanic Joshua Brown said. “We have been trying to get back to normal for awhile.”
Brown said he believes CycleNC will have a positive impact.
“I think it will be a really big help especially with a lot of businesses like ourselves, we are still trying to recover, we still have construction going on, so it will really pump that vibrant downtown feel again especially for as much as all the downtown businesses went through,” Brown said.
1,100 riders and their families are expected to stay the weekend of October 4.
There will be outdoor camping at Union Point Park.
Executive director Tashi McCoy of Visit New Bern said she contacted the state immediately following Florence to secure a stop in New Bern.
“We needed those individuals here to tell our story that we are back online,” McCoy said “The estimated impact to the area is about 150,000 dollars, so that will be great for our local attractions, our bed and breakfasts our hotels and our merchants downtown.”
Brown said he expects sales to increase to the biking event.
“It will be a moral booster that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for people. The main thing is to just let people know that we are still here and not gone.”
