Dare Co. student eliminated in Scripps National Spelling Bee

BUXTON, N.C. (WNCT) – A Dare County student was eliminated after competing in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee this week in National Harbor, Maryland.

11-year-old Blake Cabral was one of 258 spellers in this year’s competition. He was eliminated during Wednesday’s preliminary round.
Blake is in the 5th grade at Cape Hatteras Elementary School in Buxton.
Including Blake, there were 13 spellers in the Bee from North Carolina. Two of those spellers moved on to the finals.
According to his biography on the Scripps National Spelling Bee website, Blake is the youngest of four boys, and he enjoys playing sports, especially baseball. He’s a member of his elementary school’s Battle of the Books team and wrote his first book through National Novel Writing Month last fall.
Blake and his family went on a great trip last summer to Yellowstone National Park and surrounding states. He loves animals and has a dog named Copper and a ferret named Ellie.
