NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT)- One woman was found dead Tuesday morning after a fire at a New Bern apartment complex.
New Bern Fire and Rescue tells us it happened around 8:56 a.m. They were called to 1212 Gurten Street in the Reserve at Glenburnie apartment complex after reports of smoke coming from an apartment.
Firefighters evacuated all the surrounding apartments and were able to contain the fire to a single apartment where they were able to put the fire out.
Inside the apartment, they found a woman dead. She is identified as “Elizabeth Bader.” Ms. Bader was the only person in the apartment at the time of the fire.
New Bern Fire-Rescue is investigating the fire with the help of the New Bern Police Department.
Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
“We believe Ms. Bader may have fallen asleep and was unable to escape once the fire started,” said New Bern Fire-Rescue Fire Marshal Danny Hill. “Tonight, our thoughts and prayers are with the Bader family.”
Officials say the apartment’s sprinkler system and smoke detectors were working.
Neighbors were allowed back into their apartments by noon.
There were no other injuries reported.
Damage to the apartment is estimated at about $25,000.
While the investigation is ongoing, the unit has been turned back over the apartment complex ownership for renovation and repair.
