Deputies: Rabies found in raccoon killed after attacking dog in Martin County

A raccoon killed after attacking a dog in Martin County has tested positive for rabies, deputies said.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office Animal Enforcement Division said they located a raccoon corpse from the area of Dan Peele Road near Bear Grass on Monday.

Deputies said the raccoon had attacked a domestic dog and was killed by the dog’s owner.

The racoon was sent to North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health where rabies tests were performed on the animal.

On Wednesday, deputies received a report from N.C. State Laboratory of Public Health indicating that the raccoon had tested positive for rabies.

Deputies have already taken the required precautions to ensure that the dog involved in the incident is quarantined.
