Down Eats: El Taco Loco in New Bern

Authentic Mexican food and New Bern may not sound like they go together, but El Taco Loco is proving the pair make a pretty good combo.

“It’s kind of off the beaten path,” said Charles Tendell. “You don’t know its here unless you’ve been here or you’ve been invited.”

For the customers who have found the hidden jewel, the food and great customer service keeps them coming back for more.

One of the signature dishes at the place is conveniently a taco made with “loco” meat.

“It’s chopped onion. It has pork, beef, Mexican sausage, and ham,” said Deniesse Leon.

If you’re not in a taco mood, bring your appetite for the gigantic burritos!

“It’s like a gym work out just picking these things up,” said WNCT’s Josh Birch.

Weighing in at between two and three pounds each, the burritos can be stuffed with just about anything you can imagine.

“It’s two meals basically. I’ve seen few people that could eat a whole burrito by itself,” said Jeremy Cole.

Another hit is an American-Mexican fusion dish — carne asada fries.

You take French fries and top them with shredded steak, cheese, Pico de Gallo, avocado and sour cream.

El Taco Loco also recently opened up a dessert portion in the restaurant, featuring classic Mexican desserts that will blow your mind.
