A bus driver has been suspended after a student was left on a Windsor Elementary School bus for about four hours Wednesday, the school system confirmed.
The girl had been on the bus since about 8 a.m. and a school custodian found her on the bus around noon.
The bus was parked in the school bus parking lot, which is located directly beside the school building.
In a statement, Bertie County Schools described it as a “very serious matter” that “should never have happened.”
Schools officials said the state school bus driver’s handbook specifies “it is the driver’s responsibility make sure there are no passengers left on the bus at the end of each route.”
The driver has been suspended until further notice.
The student was checked by a school nurse and released to her parents.
Bertie County Schools said it is doing a thorough investigation and that it “will continue to take the safety of our students very seriously.”
