GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.
Did you know that Eastern North Carolina has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country? Many of you have questions about the disease and that’s why, Thursday night, 9 On Your Side hosted a phone bank to help our viewers get answers. Health experts from Vidant Health were on hand to answer any questions about diabetes.
9 On Your Side is also taking a closer look at people living with the disease, like Kade McLawhorn. He’s a 5-year-old type one diabetic in kindergarten at Snow Hill Primary School. He was diagnosed in August 2014. Kade tests his blood sugar 10 times a day, counts carbs, and gives himself insulin. At times, he faces setbacks, but he doesn’t let diabetes slow him down.
“Sometimes I miss part of my lunch because I’m trying to count the carbs and prick my finger and give me insulin and all that stuff,” Kade said.
Kade is one of many diabetics living right here in the East. Because he takes care of himself, he’s living a normal life despite his disease. We’ll have more on Kade’s story and other diabetics coming up Thursday night.
