GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Veteran’s day celebrations continued Saturday at the ECU home game against Southern Methodist University for their military appreciation day.
Hundreds were honored for their service in the military.
ECU Alumna, Kimberly Jackson said she is proud of her alma mater for recognizing the sacrifice so many make every day.
“It just shows the importance of how ECU is such a community school, and they want to support every. Not just in the state but the whole country and the world,” said Jackson.
Players and fans came equipped with their American flags and roaring cheers.
Many made their first stop at the military tailgate for food and fun.
Greg Harrison is an Air Force Veteran. He said he came to support his daughter in her first year at ECU but also the military.
“A lot of veterans have attended school here, and I’m here to support them.”
E-6 Technical sergeant with the air force, Matthew Thomas said all day he’s heard one thing. “A whole lot of thank you’s. Thank you, and thanks for coming out. We appreciate you, and a whole lot thanks for our service.”
“I’ve been in the army for almost 23 years,” said Army veteran Joseph Pierce
He and his family are no strangers to military life.
His wife Tanya is also a veteran.
“It’s really great to celebrate all military and especially their family members because often times the family members are often overlooked so a time for everybody to be together and enjoy in the festivities,” said Tanya.
Pierce also works for ECU’s ROTC program.
“It means a lot to me to see event the university make an effort to appreciate the veterans,” explained Joseph. “And we have a strong military community here in eastern North Carolina.”
Pierce said no matter what, military life will always be a family affair, and so will the pirate life.
