ECU student died due to complication related to Type 1 diabetes, family says

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) The student who was found unresponsive in a residence hall on East Carolina University campus died from complications related to Type 1 diabetes, his family informed.

The student who passed away in a residence hall on East Carolina University’s campus on October 18 has been identified as Joseph Robert Harbolt of Emerald Isle, ECU officials said.

According to Harbolt’s family, he died from complications related to Type 1 diabetes.

Harbolt was a junior at ECU and an intended nursing major.

Harbolt was discovered unresponsive by his roommate in their room in Fleming Residence Hall around 7 p.m.

ECU continues to offer support to the friends and family of Joseph Harbolt.

The ECU Counseling Center is available Monday-Friday for anyone seeking counseling services.

Walk-in hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT)- According to an ECU faculty memo, officials are investigating the death of a student on campus.

The student was found deceased in his dorm room on Saturday evening.

His cause of death is unknown.

No foul play is expected.
