GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- ECU Softball packed their bags and loaded the bus Thursday morning to travel west for their season opener in Tempe, Arizona.
The Pirates will be competing in the 2016 Kajikawa Classic in much warmer weather over the next three days.
ECU Softball is under new leadership this season with head coach Courtney Oliver. Coach Oliver spent the last three seasons as the pitching coach at NC State.
“This couldn’t be a better time for us to take off on the road” says Coach Oliver. “I’m really excited for the team. Another week of practice wouldn’t do us any good. Just getting out there and getting the first game jitters out and getting some games under our belt is going to be the best thing for us.”
The Pirates will take on Virginia, Seattle, UC Riverside, No. 22/20 Arizona State and Nevada during the three-day event.
This marks the fourth time in the last six seasons in which the Pirates have competed in a tournament hosted by Arizona State.
