GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – If you’re driving around East Carolina University’s campus, you will notice thousands of students heading back to campus.

An estimated 5,700 students are moving into ECU’s dorms this week, many for the first time.

“It’s nervous but it’s also really exciting because it’s new experiences and I’m gonna meet new people and meet my roommate,” said Abigail Efting, an incoming ECU freshman.

Abigail says she’s ready to start her first year.

“I know there’s a lot of spirit which I’m really excited about. Football games are huge, and I didn’t have much of that in high school. And so just like to be with the community of Greenville that loves ECU is just really exciting.”

Some students already moved in and are taking classes.

It’s a part of ECU’s newest Living Learning Community, Anchors, a program for first generation college students.

“We’ve had the opportunity to move in two weeks early into Garrett Hall, and start some of our classes early, and become more adjusted to a college campus,” said Jenna Price, an incoming ECU freshman and Anchor participant.

ECU Police said they are doing their part to make new students feel safe on campus.

“We’re hoping that we can help them over manage their safety, and to have a safe experience here in this fall semester,” said Lt. Chris Sutton of the ECU Police Department.

All new students are encouraged to download the Live Safe app, which can alert police almost instantly, should an emergency arise.

Students moving in said they can’t wait to officially become a pirate.
