GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – ECU students are digging up parts of Greenville’s Town Common to find a city landmark.
The historic Sycamore Hill Baptist Church was once located at the intersection of Greene and First Streets before an arsonist burned it down.
Professor Charles Ewen’s class now wants to find the church’s foundation and cemetery.
His class used ground-penetrating radar to examine the area before excavating sections.
“I’m hoping that we actually find some evidence of the foundations so that we can trace them out,” Prof. Ewen said. “It’s looking like maybe they really were all completely eradicated but we won’t know until we finish digging.”
A report will be presented to the city council in April.
