GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – We are only hours away from ECU’s annual Purple/Gold spring football game, but before the players hit the field there’s a lot of action happening off the gridiron.
Some folks will battle it out on the grill in the 33rd Pigskin Pig-Out cooking contest, while others are looking for a deal on some East Carolina gear.
This weekend’s festivities kicked off today with a golf tournament, an equipment sale, a birthday party for Pirates’ mascot PeeDee and always a crowd favorite, the Parade of Pigs.
ECU Cheerleaders, PeeDee and the Marching Pirates led a delivery truck around the concourse of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium delivering hogs to participants in the Pig Cooking Contest.
40 teams will compete in this year’s event beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The winner will be announced at 11 a.m.
The stadium gates open at 9 a.m. and BBQ plates will be on sale beginning at 11:30 a.m.
You and the kids can also meet this year’s Pirates as the football team will sign autographs from 11:30 a.m. until noon.
Then it’s back the business, as the 2016 Purple/Gold spring football game kicks off at 2 p.m.
Fans can get their first glimpse of the Pirates under new head football coach Scottie Montgomery.
And before you head to the game, why not grab some ECU swag. The Pirates are transitioning from NIKE to Adidas next season, so an equipment sale will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Cash and credit will be accepted.
