NEWPORT, N.C. (WNCT) – Fourth graders at Bogue Sound Elementary started a unique program Tuesday learning all about oysters.
The students will begin a project with the UNCW Oyster Spat Monitoring program and the North Carolina Coast Guard at Fort Macon.
The program started after the class’s teacher, Jessica Tull, who’s a coast guard reservist, was called to active duty.
Students will have several projects including observation activities and checking water salinity and temperature.
“I’m excited about working with a scientist and real coast guard people,” said 4th grader Aiden Snavely.
The program also received a Bright Idea Grant from Jones Onslow Electric to help fund educational resources and observation field trips.
