GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Local fire departments are giving tips that could save your pet if there’s a fire at your home.
The ASPCA and Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina have stickers that will alert firefighters if you have an animal inside.
Take notice of where cats hide. Dogs tend to try and get out during a fire. Once you’re safe, tell crews if your pet may still be in the home.
“Anytime we go into a structure that is on fire, we always do a primary search,” said Rebekah Thurston, Greenville Fire-Rescue. “In our primary search, if we find any kind of living animal or pet, we will bring them out.”
If your dog has smoke inhalation, take them to the vet immediately. Some fire departments will administer oxygen masks to a cat or dog if available.
