NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Craven County students are celebrating after being recognized for his efforts to stop teens from texting and driving.
WNCT honored Ryan Day naming his video entry as the winner of the “End The Trend” contest. His friend Parker Smith helped make the video in the joint contest with Phil Ford Basketball.
Last year, troopers investigated 48,000 crashes involving teen drivers.
This year’s contest is all about getting teens to put their phones down and focus on the road.
“There’s been so many fatalities because of distracted driving, we thought it would be a good idea to bring it to the attention of teens and young adults,” explained Phil Ford.
“Definitely end the trend,” said Smith. “To me, it’s all distracted driving, not just texting, maybe eating food in your car.”
For winning the contest, Day is taking home $2,500, which they say they’ll save.
Ford says his group plans to continue the contest in the future.
