GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Music fans across the East may have something to cheer about if the hopes of ECU athletic officials become reality.
On Thursday, they announced country superstar Eric Church would be headlining a show in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on August 20.
If all goes well, ECU and the event’s promoters hope to keep it an annual tradition, with the possibility of adding more big shows.
“You know we’re trying to give people east of Raleigh somewhere to go and our facilities are sitting here,” said J.J. McLamb, ECU’s Associate Athletic Director. He said the event was only made possible through the collaboration with IMG and Basis Entertainment, who will be the promoters for the show.
When deciding on the artist, McLamb said they looked to see who wasn’t already performing in Raleigh or North Carolina. Eric Church, who is from the state, will play his only show in 2016 in North Carolina in Greenville.
Gary DeWaard with Basis Entertainment said he wants to make Greenville a destination for big headliners on tour, “They (Eastern Carolina) typically don’t have the major touring acts coming through, and it just fit the profile perfectly.”
The event is being called Carolina Kickoff, and will also feature at least two opening acts before Church takes the stage.
McLamb said they’re already working out the logistics with ECU, as the concert falls during move-in weekend for students.
Alcohol will be sold in the club sections, Murphey Center, and the Pirate Club Building, with the possibility of adding additional locations.
Tickets start at $39 and go on sale May 17 for students and football season ticket holders. The general public can buy their tickets starting May 24.
