OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WAVY) — The ferry service from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island resumed early Friday morning, more than two weeks after Hurricane Florence forced officials to cancel service.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said in a Facebook post ferries between the two began running again at 4:30 a.m. Officials included a full Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry schedule in the post.
Visitors were allowed to return to Ocracoke last week, via the Swan Quarter to Ocracoke ferry route. The island was one of several localities to be evacuated ahead of Florence.
The Outer Banks was spared the worst of Florence, as the storm shifted to the south and made landfall near Wilmington. Nearly 50 deaths have been blamed by Florence — 37 of which were in North Carolina.
