BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) – Five people were helped out of Taylor’s Creek Wednesday evening after a pier collapsed at the Spouter Inn Restaurant in Beaufort.

No injuries were sustained, but according to Beaufort County officials, five females were in Taylor’s Creek after the dock collapsed on 218 Front Street. With the help of an off-duty coast guardsman, he entered the water and helped the women out of the creek.

Beaufort EMS checked on all of the individuals and nobody was injured.

The group was trying to take a photo on the pier when it collapsed. They are taking full responsibility and not seeking civil action due to them removing the rope that was preventing access to the pier.

According to the a Beaufort inspector, the dock collapsed due to rusty nails, old boards and no fasteners. It was over 20 years old.

Inspectors aren’t required to check, but they can be requested at any time. Insurance companies can also request inspections.
