Former police officer sentenced for sex with teen

BOLIVIA, N.C. (AP) – A former police officer in Brunswick County has been sentenced for having sex with a teen.

The district attorney’s office said in a statement Tuesday that 26-year-old Braxton Rushawn Strickland was accused of having sex with the victim while working as a police officer in Shallotte.

Strickland was sentenced to between four and nine years in prison on a charge of solicitation to commit statutory rape. The Shallotte man was accused of having consensual sex with the teen when she was between 14 and 16 years old.

State Bureau of Investigation agents handled the investigation. A Brunswick County grand jury indicted Strickland in October.

Assistant District Attorney Jamie Turnage said the case was resolved without putting the victim through a trial while also getting a prison sentence for Strickland.
