Former President Bill Clinton makes unannounced Greenville stop

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former President Bill Clinton made an unannounced stop in Greenville Monday. Among the stops on his trip, East Carolina University and Coastal Fog in Uptown.

While at ECU, Clinton greeted students and took pictures. Many students were surprised to see a former president on campus.

“I saw like a group of people like stacked up over here and I was like who is that? So I walked up there and I saw Bill Clinton, and I was like Bill Clinton,” said ECU freshman Ugo Sumeofia.

Clinton was outside Joyner Library for almost a half hour as the crowd around him continued to grow.

WNCT asked Clinton why he decided to stop at ECU one day before the election.

“They can determine the outcome of the election,” Clinton said. “It’s a close election. It’s really coming down to who votes. North Carolina, more than any state in the country in some ways is being given a chance to make a statement about what America will be like in the future”

Despite tremendous early voter turnout across the state, Clinton said they are still worried about those impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

“We really have to work extra hard to make sure it’s not too hard for them to vote and they can be heard too,” he said.

But not everyone was happy to see him on campus. Several Trump supporters said they thought it was a random stop that didn’t do much to raise support for Hillary Clinton.

Pitt County GOP Chairperson Ginni Cooper said it just shows how scared the Clinton camp is.

“I think it shows desperation on their part, the Democrats, because they usually have kind of counted North Carolina in their column and I think they cannot do that this time,” Cooper said.

Unlike Trump’s slogan, though, Clinton said America is already going in the right direction.

“It isn’t true that America is going downhill,” Clinton told WNCT. “America is going uphill. We just had our 80th month of job growth.”

After leaving Greenville, Clinton flew to Philadelphia where he met up with his wife and President Obama for a rally.
