GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) Kicking off East Carolina University’s homecoming weekend, hundreds gathered at Five Point Plaza in downtown Greenville for a Halloween-themed “Freaky” Freeboot Friday.

The festivities included candy, costumes, food and music.

With homecoming falling on Halloween weekend, thousands of people are expected to make their way to greenville to celebrate.

One fan said there’s nothing like coming back home to Pirate Nation.

“During homecoming, it’s so much fun because you have people coming back…that graduated a long time ago,” said Patrick Hunt, a senior at ECU. “Especially if you’re in an organization, you get to see a bunch of old friends that graduated.”

It’s been weeks since the Pirates played in rowdy Dowdy.

The last time they did, more than a dozen band members decided to take a knee during the national anthem, causing controversy on both sides of the issue.

Since then, multiple groups have released statements for and against the actions of the Marching Pirates.

But at Five Point Plaza, the focus was on candy not controversy.

The event goes on until 8 p.m.
