Greenville stores raise money for domestic violence victims

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – My Sister’s Closet and My Sister’s Attic in Greenville may boast the latest trends and fashionable finds, but the stores are also helping victims of domestic violence get the resources they need.

“The money we raise here goes directly to services for domestic violence victims,” said Laura King, who works at My Sister’s Closet. “All of it stays local. And we’re very proud that we can support that organization.”

From blouses and pants to household goods, you can find just about anything between these two stores. All of the money raised goes towards the Center for Family Violence Prevention.

“Victims need the services that we provide,” King said. “We provide shelter, we provide court services, we provide counseling.”

The stores operate solely on donations and according to Chip Laughinghouse, who works at My Sister’s Attic, they have a very loyal clientele.

“They’re our customers, but they can also be people that consign,” Laughinghouse said. “So, you see the same people in and out every week.”

Customers not only appreciate the products available but also know they’re helping their community in the process.

“If they’re looking for something in particular, and it’s not here, they’ll wait and come back because they know the cause, and they know how important it is,” said Laughinghouse. “They also know they can get a good deal.”

While it’s a good deal for consumers and a good cause for victims in Pitt County, resources are still hard to come by.

“Last year, we had to turn away over 450 clients, families, because we didn’t have the room,” Laughinghouse said. “We didn’t have the resources to take care of the clients that need help.”

The stores are now focused on opening a new safe house in Pitt County to help even more people. Opening a safe house is expensive, however, so the more products sold at the stores, the better.
