GRIFTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The town of Grifton was one of the most devastated areas in eastern Carolina with many homes completely underwater.

Folks WNCT’s Jaqueline Matter spoke with Monday said they can’t even make it across what is supposed to be a road to get to their homes.

But in the small town of Grifton, working together in a time of need is really what it’s all about.

That’s why the Caring Sisters Outreach has partnered with other volunteer organizations in Lenoir County to bring everything from clothes to food, diapers, hygiene products, even books and toys to those who have lost everything.

Organizers said what started as a small effort of giving back has turned into a widespread donation center, serving dozens of folks in Grifton daily.

“Everybody is trying to do things to help,” explained Cyndy Graham, Caring Sisters Outreach. “So whatever we can do to help or if you have stuff at home that you’re not using and you weren’t affected by the flood, there is somebody that could use it because they’ve lost everything.”

The donation center at Fast Tax will be open throughout the week from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. They also will be serving hot meals daily for those who come around lunch time.

And they’ll continue to accept donations, including school supplies as flood waters recede and many children will be in need as they head back to school.

One local man said he still cannot get to his house and is essentially starting his life over because when he last checked on his home by boat, all he could see was the roof.
